about us

We have entered a world of great divisions, where culture differences prevent understanding and the power of education and friendship is impeded by politics and geographic distance. Our children are being educated in environments of isolation crafted by uniformity and media. We grow up learning about our own countries and cultures, those that are tangible and obvious. Yet, there is no place for curious and motivated students to actively learn and participate in the international community in a sustainable way that doesn’t mimic aid or charity work.

At Dear Syria, we seek to build environments that span oceans and connect American students with their peers in the Middle East. International friendships work to build understanding and appreciation of the diversity of humanity. We seek to encourage activism and passionate education among the next generation and to build a community of informed students who disregard stereotypes. We look to engage the youth of opposing cultures in a global dialogue about current world issues to build a generation of empathetic and proactive students.

We hope to partner Arabic speakers and college students with local youth to engage in a pen-pal network with Syrian refugees living in Jordan. These teams will connect with their peers abroad through handwritten letters and will learn about other cultures, politics and humanitarian issues. Monthly meetings provide a space for students to translate their letters and explore ways to engage in social activism at the global level. We are looking for innovative, motivated students who want to build a better future for education, venture beyond the standard curriculum and engage in the global community.
